From One Generation to Another

One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.

-Psalm 145: 4-

Years ago, I taught a lesson on prayer to our elementary aged children at church. We were talking about God answering prayer and I told the kids stories about a couple of times when I prayed for my kids. Like the time I prayed that my daughter Emily would be assigned a third grade teacher who would understand her unique learning style and how she was motivated to learn. I think I requested a teacher who was “motherly.” Imagine my surprise when I found out her teacher for the next year would be a man named Eddie Palmer! As it turned out, Mr. Palmer was exactly the kind of teacher that Emily needed AND he moved with her class to the next grade, so she was in his class for two years. It was transformational for her academically and it made a huge impression on me about God’s wisdom and grace in responding to our needs.

Then there was the time I prayed for my daughter Brittany to get a certain job that seemed just perfect for her. I was almost as devastated as she was when she didn’t get the job, and struggled to help her have faith that God was, indeed, working on her behalf. A few weeks later the person who had been given the job, quit and Brittany was hired immediately. The children in the class were so interested! I asked them if there was a time God had answered prayer in their lives. It took a while for them to make the connection between their parents’ or their own prayers and the events that followed, but once the connection was made, the stories just kept coming!

It is our responsibility to teach the “next generation” the mighty works of God. Even if you’re not a teacher by profession, you impact the younger generations when you give testimony of the mighty things you’ve seen God do in your lifetime. In your time of reflection today, remember some of those “wonders” and be ready to tell the story!

Prayer

Lord, help me to remember to tell of the wonders you have done for me personally. Make me bold in giving you the glory for the ways my life has been touched and transformed by those mighty works. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
